SUMMARY:The politics of protest policing in the US
DESCRIPTION:Webinaire portant sur les pratiques policières face aux manifestations aux États-Unis le 10 mars 2022 \nJennifer Earl\, professeure en sociologie (University of Arizona)\, résumera la littérature sur la façon dont la répression et le maintien de l’ordre diffèrent en fonction de l’idéologie des manifestations (par exemple\, mouvements de droite ou de gauche). Elle discutera également du rôle et des conséquences du recours aux arrestations pour contrôler les manifestations aux États-Unis. Les normes légales du système juridique américain sont peu exigeantes en matière d’arrestations et les conséquences des arrestations et de l’expérience préalables au procès sont très difficiles\, autant sur le plan physique\, émotionnel que financier. L’auteure met en lumière la manière dont ces éléments ont été utilisés aux États-Unis pour appliquer des sanctions importantes aux manifestants sans preuves significatives ni examen substantiel par les tribunaux. \nHeidi Reynolds-Stenson\, professeure en sociologie\, criminologie et anthropologie (Colorado State University)\, présentera ses travaux sur les pratiques policières différenciées face aux manifestations contre la brutalité policière\, comparativement aux manifestations pour d’autres motifs. Elle situera ses travaux par rapport à l’état des connaissances sur les facteurs prédictifs des pratiques policières face aux manifestations aux États-Unis. Si cela suscite de l’intérêt\, elle sera également disponible pour répondre aux questions relatives aux impacts de la répression par l’état sur la participation aux manifestations et sur les changements historiques des pratiques policières. \nPour visionner le webinaire en français : \n \nDr. Jennifier Earl \, professor of Sociology (University of Arizona) will summarize what the repression literature has to say about how policing differs based on the ideology of the protester (e.g.\, right or left-leaning movements). She will also discuss the role and consequences of the use of arrests to control protest in the United States. The US legal system uses a low standard for lawful arrests and allows for very physically\, emotionally\, and financially difficult arrest and pre-trial experiences. Together\, she highlights how these have been used in the United States to apply significant sanctions to protesters without significant evidence or substantial court review. \nDr. Heidi Reynolds-Stenson\, professor of Sociology\, Criminology and Anthropology (Colorado State University)\, will focus on her research on the disparate police response to protests against police brutality compared to protests on other issues. She will situate these findings within the broader state of knowledge on predictors of police response to protests in the U.S. and\, if there is interest\, will also be available to answer questions related to the impact of state repression on protest participation and to historical shifts in protest policing. \nThis webinar is also available in English \n
